Team Report

Another sunny and hot midday at Tampines. Berossia was going to be the first real test for our team this season with their very young and agile players who utilize a very simple but effective tactic of luring opposition into their half and then sending long balls into flanks towards corner flags. For USSR, for the first time in the season we missed both of our regular central defenders requiring on of midfielders to drop there weakening attacking options. Due to weather conditions, our tactic was similar to previous game - let Berossia control the ball and pass around, protect flanks using fast defenders, and try to find Bugra for a clean shot. First goal is always crucial in this type of games and, unfortunately, despite an earlier chance by Bugra to open the score with his header acrobatically saved by Berossia's goalkeeper, Berossia scored first. Towards the end of the first half, surrounded by 3 defenders who failed to clear the ball, Berrosia's player poke stroke a low soft shot from outside the box which caught our goalkeeper out of position, something that Sergey should save any day given his high standards. From there on we had to gamble and start opening up in search of equalizer. In the second half, Berossia had numerous chances to score but our goalie was at his best this time around. On the other side, Berossia's defence was playing very well: hold offside line well, blocking several goal-bound shots, blocking crosses, preventing corners by trying to kick the ball for throw-in (we had only corner), fighting for every ball and sometimes even doing tactical fouls. We were literally worn out by the end and allowed a soft goal from a corner 8 mins to the end due to poor marking as some players didn't come back. The chase was over as the final whistle was blown with us still trying to get a consolation goal. Our MOM would usually go to goalkeeper Sergey but the first goal was too crucial and his later saves only impacted the goal difference, so Ramon gets one for his tireless work in the middle. Berossia's MOM goes to their central defender for excellent commanding, unfortunately no numbers were worn so we give it to number 4.
