Sengkang GRC Football League Season 1 Division 1

  • Week 14: Back2Back are crowned Champions as Sengkang West dramatically secure 3rd spot!

Back2Back FC clinched the Sengkang West Inter-Zone Sunday 2019/2020 League Title this week when they were awarded a 3-0 walk-over win over Rusty Reunited. The league Champions finish the season tied on points with Edgefield Warriors having only lost one game all season. Only five goals seperate the top two sides.

Over at Compassvale Secondary, Sengkang West Knights were in need of a big win over rivals Riverbower FC in their final game of the season. Having narrowly lost the first leg 3-2, the away side came into this tie needing a 4-goal win margin in order to leapfrog their opponents into 3rd spot. In what can only be described as one of the greatest “comebacks’ in X-league history, the Kinghts dug deep and came away 5-1 winners in dramatic fashion.

Here’s full account of the game in the words of Sengkang West Knights, "Last match week of the inaugural Sengkang West Inter-zone League, the boys were pumped to close this season on a high. As some termed the game between Sengkang West Knights and Riverbower a 'derby', our boys were keen to score a win against Riverbower after gifting them 3 points back in the opening game of the league.

Knowing that we needed to beat Riverbower by 4 goals, the boys started off well and were up 2-0 thanks to goals from Nicholas and Rahmat. Momentum was just picking up before a sucker punch by one of our old boys Hafiz Hassan, showing his striking prowess by heading in a corner to pull a goal back for Riverbower. Peng then picked up a mistake from the opposing keeper and made him pay for it with a cheeky lob from outside the penalty box (similar to Martial's goal against Watford this weekend). Ramlan then pulled a “Toni Kroos” by scoring directly from a corner, which left the opposition shell-shocked. SKW Knights then went into half-time with a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Riverbower came out in the second half, tightening up their defence and SKW Knights were having some trouble breaking it down. Ultimately, the sheer grit and determination shown by SKW Knights proved too strong to be stopped by Riverbower as Rahmat converted a beautiful curler into the top left corner to end the match 5-1. A score which ultimately clinched 3rd place for Sengkang West Knights. Kudos to all Players and Managers of Sengkang West Knights for their tremendous effort in their very first league competition. Cheers to Riverbower for the great game and sportsmanship”.

To summarize, the season comes to a close with K.Selvaganapathy from Edgefield Warriors winning the “Top Scorer Award” with 13 league goals. Ramzam Mohamed of Riverbower FC walks away with the “Most Valuable Player” Award after garnering 11 points.

  • Week 13: Back2Back move one step closer to league title

Both Back2Back FC and Edgefield Warriors were on display this week with the league title on the line. The only difference is that Back2Back has one game left to play while this week will mark the final game for Edgefield Warriors. Should both teams finish with wins, the league title will be decided on goal difference. So you can imagine what followed with that info in mind…

At Punggol Secondary, Sengkang West Knights were victims of “ruthless aggression” as Back2Back FC hit them for 10. That’s right, the score line read 10-0 at the end of the game thanks to goals from Raja Faiz (4), Muhammad Danial (3), Syed Abdul Hafiz, Tristan Reeves and Mohammad Razip aka Ajip. Here’s what Back2Back had to say after tha game, “We came into this tie needing as much goals as we can. The boys went all out to make up the shortfall of the goal difference in the league standings. This was certainly a good comeback following the defeat to the Warriors. We’d like to thank the Knights for their sportsmanship and a good game”.

Over at Compassvale Secondary, goals from K.Selvaganapathy (2), Rayyan Mohamed, Muhammad Rashe, Erwan Aminurrahim and Man of the Match, Hafidz Ridzwan saw Edgefield Warriors beat Rusty Reunited 7-1 in their final game of the season. The result means that Edgefield end the season on 21 points, 3 ahead of Back2Back FC who have one game in hand.

Leading into the final week of the season, Back2Back FC have a superior goal difference as opposed to Edgefield meaning only a loss or a draw to Rusty Reunited will prevent them from being crowned Champions.

  • Week 12: Knights in shining armour prevail!

It was the battle at the bottom of the league standings this week as Rusty Reunited took on Sengkang West Knights at Punggol Secondary School. The Knights came into this tie with 3 points and desperately needed a win to have any chance of battling for a top 3 finish this season.

Rusty Reunited paid the price for beginning the game with less than 11 men when Rahmat Saring aka Ranggo, placed the ball into the back of the net in the 11th min of play. Augustine Chan then made it 2-0 in the 40th min when he skilfully trapped a long pass from the Sengkang West goalkeeper and clinically slotted home with his left foot. Nur Muzaqki
then put the icing on the cake with five mins left to play when he too scored a solo effort after receiving a pass from the Sengkang West goalkeeper, Amri who had two assists in the match.

Here’s what the knights had to say after the game, “It was a good game against Rusty even though they had insufficient players throughout the game. They put up a good fight, playing like a 12-man team. We did not capitalize on the numerical advantage and missed quite a number of good scoring chances. If converted, the score line could had been at least 6-0”.

  • Week 5: Magnificent 7 for Back2Back as Warriors dig deep to secure crucial win

Sengkang West Knights went into their tie against Edgefield Warriors this week knowing that they needed to secure three points to have any chance of challenging for top honours this season. Having won their previous game 3-0, the away side was hoping to ride on the momentum of the win but it was not meant to be. Despite a dramatic equalizer by Ramlan Ishak, Edgefield came away 2-1 winners.

Here’s an in depth anlysis of the match provided by the away side- “It was the third match for SKW Knights. After a convincing win in our previous match, SKW Knights looked to continue with another positive result. In the first half despite not having much of the ball, SKW Knights generally defended well coupled with some good saves from Amri. The main opportunity to take the lead came when Asyraf laid a pass for Peng only for his shot to hit the post. SKW Knights looked to build on the 0–0 scoreline at halftime and entered the second half with more intent and with some fresh legs."

"Halfway through the second half, Johnson passed the ball from the right, allowing Nic to take a shot on goal but again, the ball struck the post. Minutes later, SKW Knights conceded after Edgefield’s forward was led through on goal from a well-weighted pass. SKW Knights almost equalised soon after, only for Joe’s shot from outside the penalty box went high above goal. Fortunately minutes later, a penalty was awarded courtesy of the shot from Helmy. Ramlan confidently stepped up to take the penalty and converted it to equalise for the team. However, the equaliser was short-lived as with 5 minutes to go, EdgeField managed to score their winning goal. Definitely not a result that SKW Knights came for but by taking the positives from this match, they shall look forward to a much improved performance in their next outing”.

Over at Punggol Secondary, league leaders Back2Back FC maintained their 100% winning streak when they emerged 7-2 winner over Rusty Reunited thanks to goals from Man of the Match Mohammad Hanafi(2), Cristofer Montevirgen, Raja Faiz, Syed Abdul Hafiz, Syabil Rusaidy and Mohammad Ramdzan.

Here’s’ what the home side had to say after the game, “ The guys came fired up for our third game. Shaky start to the game as Rusty Reunited equalise immediately after our first goal. Clinical finishes from our strikers put an impact on the scoreline. Lastly thank you opponent for the good and clean game. Looking forward to playing you guys in the away fixture”.
